Spring Tree Checklist

Completing a quick spring tree assessment is a great practice to get into. There are three main things you want to look for that will give you a good indication of whether or not you’ll want to call a professional arborist to come and take a look.

Check your roof to ensure there are no branches on or near it. - If it’s close now, when the trees get their leaves and grow for the season the branches will droop more causing scratching and reducing the lifespan of shingles and siding. Branches on your roof also cause decreased air movement and sunlight allowing for/ causing cool moist conditions which are ideal for growing moss or fungus.

Broken branches and cracks in limbs/ stems - Over the winter snow loads and high winds can lead to branch failure. The constant freezing and expanding of water within the tree and branch unions can also lead to cracking of stems and branch attachments that may have not been present in previous years. Left unchecked, broken branches can compromise the tree’s health and become potential hazards.

Lack of new buds or twig growth - If other areas of the tree or other trees of the same species in the same neighbourhood are exhibiting new bud or twig growth and yours is not, this could be an indicator of poor tree health or dead branches within the tree canopy.
